The subnet mask is necessary to computers for delimitation you will not guess for anything what a subnet. That everyone could define who is with it in one network and who beyond its limits. (Generally it is possible to tell just "networks", often this term is used in IP subnet value.) The matter is that in one network computers exchange packets "directly" and when it is necessary to send a packet to other network send them to the gateway by default (the third setting configured in network properties if you remember).
