The progress made during the past generation in specialist studies of Italian Renaissance painting has seemed to carry with it a need for some re-assessment, for the general public, of the whole field in a single volume. Mr. Gould, in undertaking this task, has regarded the selection of the plates as the first consideration and has chosen, for reproduction, those pictures that seemed both characteristic of their authors and the best of their kind. He has also frequently juxtaposed pictures from earlier and later periods and thus succeeds in revealing qualities in both which might otherwise have escaped notice. The text, consisting of a commentary accompanying the illustrations, characterizes the artistic qualities of all the major and many minor painters of the Italian Renaissance.
