Demonstrating the central role of third/ninth century hadth scholars in the articulation of Sunn Islam, this book bases its findings largely upon the analysis of multiple biographical dictionaries, such as al-Dhahabs Tadhkirat al-huffz, Ibn Sa'ds Kitb al-tabaqt al-kabr, and collections of the critical comments of Ibn Man and Ibn Hanbal. Part I establishes conceptual and historical frameworks for the study of Sunn hadth scholarship.
