This book represents an attempt to integrate contemporary literary and sociological capabilities into the traditional philological base of the historical critical method. My purpose therefore presumes that previous literary and sociological applications of the method have been inadequate. In this book, however, my concern is fundamen-tally constructive. I have tried to show how new literary and socio-logical approaches can be productive, rather than how the old ones have been deficient. The book is designed to build new bridges, not to burn the old ones behind us.
