The character development in this story is intriguing and the descriptions of various places allows the reader to feel as if she or he is actually present. I could see what the author was seeing in the various scenes and could hardly put the book down as I read it. Lily's efforts to help and protect this family were fascinating and she made me laugh in regard to her reaction to praise. I imagine that many readers would choose Charlie as their favorite character in the story but my favorite character is Aidan believe it or not. I recognized kids I have worked with in Aiden. I suspect that this is the reason I reacted strongly to him. Teenagers like Aiden are complex and when someone reacts to them positively, they may even let you in-so that you can see their strengths and sensitivity. My second favorite character is Victoria. She is strong and her reactions in several cases made a difference. She surely understood her mother and tried to support her. She was able to support both of her brothers although in different ways. I was really surprised in the most exciting part of the book-you will never guess how the most serious and terrifying section of the story was resolved!
