Preface This book is designed to facilitate the integration and systematic prescription of mental health interventions. It represents an effort to apply what we know about "when, what works for whom" and to enhance the application of technical procedures to specific kinds of patient and problem presentations. It should be said, however, that this is not a manual on how to become a clinician or psychotherapist, nor is it a manual on how to conduct psychotherapy. Rather it is a manual on how to select appropriate interventions. There are many manuals on how to implement various procedures, both somatic and psychosocial this volume may be complemented by reference to these manuals. Accordingly, we have provided suggested readings at the end of each chapter to assist in this process. We intend the system of clinical decision making and treatment selection presented in this book to do more than simply provide a basis for the application of technology, however. We also hope that this book will facilitate the development of a certain thought process, one that is sufficiently flexible to accommodate an expanding array of therapeutic styles
