The political parties have been my principal interest in my studies of Israeli politics. My three previous books focused on the Israel Labor Party (until 1968, known as Mapai: Hebrew acronym for Eretz-Israel Workers Party).l The central research questions posed in these studies were: Who rules in the State of Israel, and how is that rule implemented? My underlying thesis was that political parties constitute the most important political organizations in a democratic state, therefore, a knowledge of their structure and composition is an essential prerequisite for understanding the power structure in such a state.
