This book applies the theory of noncommutative Grobner bases in free associative algebras to the construction of universal associative envelopes for nonassociative structures defined by multilinear operations. It begins by recalling the basic definitions of the most familiar examples of nonassociative structures: finite dimensional Lie and Jordan algebras and their universal associative enveloping algebras. It takes an algorithmic approach, developing just enough theory to motivate the computational methods. Easier proofs and examples are left as exercises for the reader.
