Aristocracy and its Enemies describes how the French revolutionaries tried to abolish the nobility, a group which had dominated society and government throughout Europe since time immemorial. It analyses the intellectual roots of hostility to nobles, (particularly its precedents in revolutionary America), the steps by which revolutionaries turned against aristocracy, and the impact of persecution, emigration, confiscation and Terror. But abolition itselffailed, and post-revolutionary regimes reintegrated nobility in some form or other. Nevertheless, as William Doyle shows, the trauma of revolution changed the character and outlook of nobles for ever, and began a fatal long-term weakening of their power and prospects.
