From Introduction:
When I was just out of school, in 1907, and was taking an interest at college in languages and linguistics, particularly in the languages related to Sanskrit, I was quite intrigued to read in different books and articles that Lithuanian was a language which, of all the languages of Europe, resembled Sanskrit most, and to find even a statement like this that a Lithuanian speaking his own language would be easily understood by a Sanskrit?knowing person. Later on I came to know more about the relationship and classification of languages, and the place of Lithuanian in the Indo?European family. I took my B.A. degree from the University of Calcutta with Honours in English, and at that time I got my regular initiation into English, Germanic as well as Indo?European linguistics.
