World War I had numerous causes. Alliances for defense in war brought the major powers of Europe into two groups. Britain, France, and Russia formed the Allied Powers. Germany and Austria-Hungary formed the Central Powers. Other countries were drawn toward these groups as the war began. Members of the British Empire, including Canada, were pulled into the war for the Allies.
