This is a story of politics, war and human drama set in 1952-53 during the Korean war. It focuses on the Air Force court martial of Lt. George C. Schreiber, who was charged and convicted of the crime of premedidtated murder. Although factually innocent, Schreiber faced the death penalty and was sentenced to life in prison after his conviction. The conviction raised serious concerns as to the morality of the military justice system and eventually ionvolved the President of the United States, the US Supreme Court, the Governor of Illinois, several senators and congressmen and thousands of individual citizens outraged by the oonviction.Schreiber was an outstanding college athlete and was an All American basketball player before entering the Air Force. His story and trial was covered by all of the Chicago area newspapers and it was those correspondents who called the charge and conviction a sham that so outraged both the politicians, the ,military, the Secretary of The Air Force, the President and Governor William Stratton. The story is told by Attorney Robert A. Shaines, who at the time was a 23 year old Air Force JAG officer and was one of Schreiber's defense counsel. Shaines tells of the life changing events for both Schreiber and himself. it is a gripping and paced story of the events surrounding the charge and conviction of Schreiber and also tells of the unpreparedness of the United States to engage in the Korean War and of the failure of the commanders of the newly formed Air Force to adequately train and equip its personnel before sending them into harm's way.
