In recent years there has emerged a strong interest in the role and functioning of small and medium industries (SMI) within the broader context of macroeconomic and macrosocial systems. In developing countries particularly, the role of small businesses in economic development and in the industrialization process is receiving vigorous academic and policyoriented attention. Much of the research that has been done tends to pursue a macrolevel orientation focusing on the contribution of SMI to industrialization and modernization their impact upon the labour market the part they play in the effective utilization of available raw materials and resources their function in local markets, particularly in terms of import-substitution their capacity as foreign exchange earners through exporting capability and their integration into the national industrial system.
