About the Author Joan Beaumont is Professor Emerita, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, at The Australian National University. Her publications include the multiple awardwinning Broken Nation: Australians and the Great War (2013) with Aaron Pegram and Lachlan Grant Australia's War, 1939-45 (1996) and Gull Force: Survival and Leadership in Captivity, 1941-1945 (1988). Allison Cadzow is Research Associate at The Australian National University on the Serving Our Country: a history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the defence of Australia ARC project. She co-authored Rivers and Resilience: Aboriginal people on Sydney's Georges River (2009) with Heather Goodall and co-edited Brokers and Boundaries: Colonial Exploration in Indigenous Territory with Tiffany Shellam, Maria Nugent and Shino Konishi (2016).
