This is a book about how a small circle of Cambridge literary critics turned into a movement that revolutionized the way English was taught in schools, brought newspapers, advertising, and popular culture into classrooms, and changed the way English literature was taught in Australia, the USA, and Asia as well as within Britain. The leader of this movement, F. R. Leavis, was a well-known and controversial writer. The focus of this book is not on Leavis himself,but on the largely unsung people who put his ideas into practice. As the methods of the 'Scrutiny movement' were adapted in schools and taken overseas, they were transformed with surprising and contradictory effects.
